KTH School of Electrical Engineering Scholarships PhD Studentships

The PhD Studentships School of Electrical Engineering conducts research and education at the highest level in World Electric Power Engineering, fusion and space plasma physics, telecommunications and networks, information and control system (NICs).

The
PhD Studentships scientific and technical activities of the Department of Electric Power Systems cover development and application of methods of analysis, simulation and control of electric power systems and integrated. The research activities in this area are divided into three areas, namely the dynamics of power and control systems, power markets and production preparation, and preparation of the network grid.

Social class

Voltage Source Converter (VSC), which enables fast and independent of both the active and reactive power. In addition, in a VSC based multi-terminal direct current transmission systems (DCT-MT), operating the converter (should not the parallel connection of several DC connections lead to technical difficulties) as ideal current sources in the DC side, and change the direction of the DC-DC is converted by inversion. With these characteristics, it is believed that by using VSC-MT-DCTS based in a bulk power gives it an extraordinary threat to the operational flexibility and control over the bulk power transmission to improve the "large-scale integration of renewable energy sources in various places, and Expansion flexibility perspective.

From an economic, technical and research point of view, this project will mostly focus on the following questions and challenges:

With modern technology—for example Voltage Source Converters (VSC)—it is possible to build Multi-Terminal DC Transmission Systems (MT-DCTS), i.e., high voltage direct current systems that at several points connect to one or more discontinuous current systems. The PhD Studentships controllability of the new technology is believed to provide fantastic possibilities of enhancing the flexibility of the bulk power transmission system, which will improve the situation for efficient electricity trading, improve reliability, facilitate integration of large-scale renewable energy sources at different locations, and increase the possibilities for prospect expansion of the system.

This PhD Studentships project will study MT-DCTS both from a technical and from an economical point of view. The research will mostly focus on the following questions and challenges:

The topologies of MT-DCTS.
How should the hybrid AC-DC system be optimally operated concerning N-1 criterion (or other probabilistic methods,) congestion management, electrical losses and electricity markets?
Source of control strategies for converters to keep the DC power balance and to discharge the hybrid AC-DC system requirements. What are the advantages and disadvantages of using local and remote information, respectively, for these control strategies?
What is the impact of count fundamental frequency control signals in converters on the hybrid AC-DC system operation?
How can the fundamental frequency control between the asynchronous AC systems connected by MT-DCTS be coordinated?

Qualifications

Applicants should have a completed academic degree on master`s level in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics or a related field. Furthermore, excellent oral and written communication skills in English are required. To address its different work, KTH aims to use a diversity of talent and thus welcomes applicants who will add to the variety of the University, especially as concerns its gender structure.

PhD Studentship Optical Measurement of Precision Surfaces at Loughborough University

A postgraduate studentship is available at Loughborough University - Wolfson School of Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering to investigate new methods to increase the capability of optical interferometry and to introduce new levels of traceability in the measurement of precision engineering surfaces.

With the lateral resolution of a few micrometres and an axial resolution of a few nanometres interferometery is becoming an increasingly popular means to characterise engineering surfaces.

As a non-contacting technique, commercial interferometers make an indirect estimate of surface form deduced from measurements of the light scattered from the surface. Due to the complex interaction between light and rough surfaces anomalous behaviour can occur and, for this reason, traditional contacting methods making more direct measurements using stylus-based instrumentation remain the basis of international (ISO) surface standards. The purpose of this project is to develop optimisation strategies based on new, more sophisticated surface scattering models to increase measurement capability and to estimate uncertainty in optical interferometers.

The project is sponsored by the National Physical Laboratory (NPL) and Taylor Hobson Ltd. It is expected that the student will spend some time at one or both of the industrial partners' premises.

A first degree (First class or High 2:1 honours) in the physical sciences or mathematics is required and an interest in optics would be an advantage. Strong analysis skills and proficiency in numerical computing are essential and experience of optimisation techniques would be an advantage.

The preferred starting dates are 1 October 2010 or 1 December 2010 and the studentship will have a stipend of £8,000-£11,500 per annum, tax free, plus tuition fees. This studentship is open to UK/EU and international students.

PhD Studentships on Faculty of Computer Science & Technology, England

Meta Deskripsi
Faculty of Computer Science & Technology, University of Cambridge are seeking five PhD students across a range of system topics to investigate the implications of photonic networks on future large-scale computer systems (such as data centres or scientific computers) with a focus on power consumption reduction.

The work will involve modelling large systems of chip multiprocessors with photonic interconnect using FPGA-based emulation. These two positions are funded by the EPRSC grant EP/I004157/1

Three PhD students for the 'INTelligent Energy awaRE NETworks' (INTERNET) project whose vision is to reduce the carbon footprint of ICT networks by at least an order of magnitude - along with a corresponding reduction in non-renewable energy consumption.

PhD students would perform complimentary work across topics including: the investigation of energy-aware network protocol design and implementation for the migration of virtualised systems, performing research into the models of energy usage of networks in and between data centres, and the design and implementation of novel hardware-software interfaces. These three positions are funded by the EPSRC grant EP/H040536/1.

Candidates should have a 1st class degree in computer science, electronic engineering, mathematics or a closely related discipline, ideally with experience in one or more of the following:

  • Computer architectures
  • Computer networks
  • Virtualization and migration
  • Physical layer digital and/or optical communications
  • Digital design, FPGA programming, Hardware Description Languages
